Lorilee's Top Baby Names for 2005

Girls:

Best Hollywood Star's Baby Name: Carys, as in Carys Zeta Douglas, the no-doubt gorgeous offspring of Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones. Her mama's Welsh, hence the stunning Carys, from the same people who brought us Jennifer, Dylan etc. Runner up: Apple. I know, I know...but I think it's sweet, fresh, and evocative. My husband would say, "What's next, 'Kumquat'?" But I love it.

Best Bible Name: Noa, a simple yet vivid moniker that's actually a female name in the Bible. I know a little girl named Noa Green, and it's so perfect for her. Check out "A is for Adam" for more scoop on this incredible, adorable name.

Best Classic: Julia is so elegant, so feminine, so strong, I never get tired of it. Beautiful and biblical too!

Best Boy's Name for a Girl: A tie: Harper and Eliot, coincidentally both used for the daughters by George Stephanopolous and his wife, Ali Wentworth. When used with an ultra-fem middle name (Harper Rose, Eliot Grace...), the whole effect is fresh and tomboyish. Harper is a tip of the hat to Harper Lee, author of "To Kill a Mockingbird," and Eliot works as a lit name too (T.S. Eliot). So cool.

Best Irish Maid's Name: Bridget is sassy, spunky, and pretty all at once. I wish I was more than 1/16th Irish so I could use it!

Best "Incredibles" name: Violet is just the sweetest, most floral name ever, and Violet really kicks some boot-ay onscreen, too. The British, always ahead of us, picked Violet as a winner in the last few years. 100 years ago it was fashionable, and it's being unearthed like other white hot, golden oldies such as Frances, Anabelle, and Ruby, which I love for it's old-fashioned charm, energy, and jewel-like evocations.

Best Name that I am Naming My Child: Phoebe means "bright, shining star," and is as luminous and twinkling as ever since the days of ancient Greece. My gal Phoebe is short-listed by Bible scholars for having possibly authored Hebrews. I'd like to think she did. Wanna see my new Phoebe? Check the family photos and you'll gaze upon her sweet, angel face!

Runners up:
Paz ("peace")
Petra (as in Nemcova, the heroic supermodel)
Tabitha
Lilliana
Stella
